WI resolutions are our call for change |
|
Through national and local campaigning, members play a key role in achieving change on important issues. The WI has been campaigning for over 100 years, including some groundbreaking campaigns on equal pay and AIDS awareness. Our resolutions and mandates process is democratic and member-led, which ensures that every national campaign has its roots within the membership. In 2020, a record number of draft resolutions were sent up to NFWI's Public Affairs team. We are proud that five Resolutions were submitted from Buckinghamshire WIs.
Resolutions 2021 - 2022
Five resolutions from around the country have been short-listed to go to the vote. Every WI member has the chance to vote for each resolution. Speak to your WI Secretary for more information and see the November/December 2021 edition of WI Life.
The headlines are (in no particular order):
1. Fit for purpose: fit for girls. Girls' clothing should be equal to boys' in terms of design, quality and coverage.
2. Appropriate sentencing of non-violent women offenders. The focus should be on early intervention and community based solutions for women who have committed non-violent offences.
3. Equality in law for the menopause. The menopause should be included in discrimination law as a "protected characteristic" under the Equality Act 2010.
4. Women and girls with ASD and ADHD: under-identified, under-diagnosed, misdiagnosed, under-supported. Research funding into the female presentation of these conditions to be addressed.
5. Tackling digital exclusion. Increased investment in digital infrastructure, ensuring access to suitable devices and appropriate education and training for the significant proportion of the population who are disadvanted in these areas.

Buckinghamshire Resolutions
Not every Resolution submitted can become a mandate at national level. Did you know that Buckinghamshire Federation have a long history of supporting local Mandates?
In 2011, when, at the Annual Council Meeting in April, Bucks members passed a Resolution calling on local Health and Social Care providers to make resources for the care of stroke survivors more effective. Members acknowledged that at the time, standards of care, especially in the vital first hours after a stroke, were not consistently excellent throughout the county. We wrote to those who could make a difference to raise awareness of the issue, and partnered with other organisations working on the issue locally. We raised public awareness, helping to ensure that facilities were maintained and new ones developed. More recently, a Bucks Resolution "End Plastic Soup" (2017) as mandated and much work has been put into this specifically and also spin-off initiatives. www.thewi.org.uk/campaigns/key-and-current-campaigns/end-plastic-soup
Progress with this work continues to be monitored by the Science and Society Sub-Committee.
So if you feel the WI should be raising awareness of an issue - and it is in line with our charitable aims and objectives - get started on drafting a Resolution!
