The Members' Blog

Authorship
Until January 2020, this Blog was the voice of an individual WI member.  Over her 40 years of membership, our Blogger had made a very fine contribution to this and other Federations in England.  With interests in crafts, reading and writing and in travel, she also took an active part in campaigning for women's welfare and education and on environmental issues.  While she has now handed over the Blog to the wider Bucks membership, her archived blog posts are a testament to someone who always made the utmost of her membership, and a rich source of information about the part the WI can play in today's society.

30th July

I was amazed to find a comment on my blog when I tuned in today. So thank you to the Wandering Nomad for bothering and for saying pleasant things. It must be awful to find a ghastly jibe on one's social media page so I think the sooner these sites clean up their act the better it will be for all concerned, especially sensitive teenagers. Is this something the WI can wage war against?

The local WI Book Group met this afternoon to discuss "The Folly" by Alan Titchmarsh. This is a rather dated love story set in the world of fine arts and its auction houses. We learned a lot about the artist Munnings and we enjoyed the descriptions of Bath and its architecture but found the characterisation disappointing. I know Shakespeare used the stratagem of characters turning out to be not the person they or anyone else had thought they were but for a modern author to use it in two generations as a get-out-of-jail-free card was not an acceptable way to bring about a happy ending. It reminded me of that joke: what do grandchildren and e-mails have in common? They both give you viruses and one is never sure of their parentage!

Now I know there are people out there reading this, please someone solve a problem for me. Several mornings when I open up the conservatory there are silvery trails wandering across the carpet. There are no signs of slugs or snails at the end of these trails and nowhere where the creatures could make an entry or escape. Could it be a spider leaving a thread that shines in the sunlight? They are difficult to remove even with a vacuum cleaner. Ideas please? Should we call in Pest Control?

You can see I'm de-mob happy so enjoy your summer holiday and this wonderful weather.
