The Members' Blog

Authorship
Until January 2020, this Blog was the voice of an individual WI member.  Over her 40 years of membership, our Blogger had made a very fine contribution to this and other Federations in England.  With interests in crafts, reading and writing and in travel, she also took an active part in campaigning for women's welfare and education and on environmental issues.  While she has now handed over the Blog to the wider Bucks membership, her archived blog posts are a testament to someone who always made the utmost of her membership, and a rich source of information about the part the WI can play in today's society.

5th February
The monthly WI meeting was well attended in spite of the wet and windy weather outside. The speaker's subject was the difficult early life of Norman Wisden and it certainly made even those who were not keen on his slapstick type of comedy admire his achievements on stage.Norman was definitely the original cheeky Cockney. As usual a good part of the evening was taken up with plans for attending WI events at local and county level. We hope to compete at the County Show in August but before that in May, the WI is staging a fair in the town. Lots of interesting trade stalls have been booked and the members are going to man a couple tables offering items in jars---anything at all---and the inescapeable tombola. It was put to the vote whether the members would agree to fundraise for the Life Skills flat and garden in the Furze Down Specialist School for Communication and Interaction. It is possible to do this as a WI because it is a local venture and teaching young people how to cook, sew and grow food ranks high on the WI aims and objects. The members agreed to tackle this project but needed to know a little more about what form their support would take.

3rd February
The craft group decided to reward itself for all its hard work last year by going out to lunch. We hired the community bus again and really enjoyed each others company and we never mentioned anything to do with craft. There was a lot of laughter and good-natured banter which was just what was needed in these dark days of rain and floods. How lucky we are in Bucks when compared to other counties! So we counted our blessings and came home cheerful and well fed.
