The Members' Blog

Authorship
Until January 2020, this Blog was the voice of an individual WI member.  Over her 40 years of membership, our Blogger had made a very fine contribution to this and other Federations in England.  With interests in crafts, reading and writing and in travel, she also took an active part in campaigning for women's welfare and education and on environmental issues.  While she has now handed over the Blog to the wider Bucks membership, her archived blog posts are a testament to someone who always made the utmost of her membership, and a rich source of information about the part the WI can play in today's society.

Resolution selection

On the 23rd April I attended one of the resolution meetings held in Aylesbury. I was told that the attendance over two sittings was expected to be about a hundred. These meetings are always interesting and informative: the purpose is to brief someone from each of the Bucks WIs to present the resolutions at her own WI May meeting when the members are obliged to vote before passing the decision to the link delegate who will attend the Annual Meeting in June. Considering the number of Bucks WIs and knowing that most attendees came with a friend, the attendance figure becomes less impressive.
The National Federation of WIs provides good briefing notes, a power-point presentation and strategic advice on the national website as well as pretty full notes in WI Life. In these days, when there is at least one member in every WI with enough IT savvy to download and present this information could BFWI not do away with these resolution selection meetings and save the expense? What we want to hear about and why we attend these meetings is to learn about the local situation relevant to the resolutions, such as that given last week by Dr. Frances Butcher and our own advisor, Judith. Our Member Support team could do this advance research and add it for download on the BFWI site.
We could then spend the money saved on holding meetings and events planned to support the mandates when passed. Think--- hiring campaign awareness notices on the side of local buses, litter picks, training sessions to work with dementia sufferers, sponsoring a team to staff a mobile scan unit… I don’t know. It is just an idea. As they say in all the best exam papers   DISCUSS.

Did you not find it helpful to discuss round the tables? Also there were a few 'first time delegates' at the afternoon meeting who I am sure will have appreciated the advice on voting and procedures at the Annual Meeting.

Although I do like all your campaigning ideas as well!

Points taken: table discussion of limited value and can be done at the WI meeting and only six put up hands as delegates. Yves herself said all the information would be repeated on the coach. It is also printed in the notes in the agenda.

What do others think?

I apologise for being late to the discussion, have been away. I agree with your point so far; I also attended the resolution meeting at Aylesbury and as an attendant I cannot see the value of repeating all the information on the coach. Everyone has voted by then and if you have been given a discretionary vote then I am assuming (this is my first one) that there will be more discussion and comment and briefings during the actual conference on 5th.

maybe we turn the process upside down and hold a mini conference in the autumn when NFWI have produced the promotional material. Then we get a local speaker to enable use to develop a local action plan - DISCUSS

Exactly. That is what I was trying to say. It is so easy for members to think "OK I've voted "and then sit back and more or less wash their hands of the matter---leave it to someone else. Is it worth a try?

Will propose this at Member Support and Science & Society
